Naupaka Bar Necklace by Lahaole Designs
Naupaka, nau.paka: n. native species of shrubs (scaevola) found in the mountains and near the coast of the Hawaiian island chain. Available in 14k vermeil or sterling silver, these beauties are approximately 1 inch long.
"Dedicated to my sister, Jasmine Naupaka. The Hawaiian legend tells how Princess Naupaka fell in love with a commoner, a fisherman named Kau’i. In ancient times this was forbidden. Therefore Naupaka was banished to live in the mountain, and Kau’i forced to live near the ocean. The flower grows naturally as a little white half flower because the lovers were torn apart. Some say, if you pick a flower near the ocean, and try to walk it to the mountain it dies before it gets there, and vice versa, because the lovers can never be together again." - Tanya Uyehara
About the Designer
Located in Wahiawā, Oʻahu, Hawai'i, Lahaʻole Designs was established in 2013. Named in honor of our designers only daughter Pīkake Hepualahaʻole (the uncommon flower), we create unique jewelry and clothing capturing simple island elegance, to culturally connect your beauty from the mountain to the sea.
Born and raised on the island of Oʻahu, Native Hawaiian Owner and Designer Tanya Uyehara has always enjoyed creating. Born into a family of craftsmen and women, musicians, hula dancers, and artist she has always been surrounded by natural beauty and the arts. In 2012 while on maternity leave, Tanya started creating Christmas gifts for her nieces. Shortly after, she took a jewelry class and Laha'ole Designs was born.
With a love for creating and a passion for sharing and perpetuating her culture, Tanya uses her designs to share stories of people or things of Hawai'i nei. Each collection has kaona (a hidden meaning), made to share a story that brings each piece to life, and connects the design to the wearer.
All items are hand made and designed in Hawai'i nei. All jewelry is made using either fine silver, sterling silver, 14k gold-filled, semi precious stones and natural materials. All clothing is hand screened, and originally designed, and collections are hand sewn by the designer.
