About the Artist:
Originally from Honolulu Hawaiʻi, CJ Dunn designs typefaces for retail and custom clients. He enjoys both making type and using type, and is interested in the dialog between the two practices.
CJ first got hooked on typography and typeface design while studying with Ed Benguiat at The School of Visual Arts in New York. He later completed a Post-graduate Certificate in typeface design from The Cooper Union. After a decade of work as a graphic designer, he started his type design career working for Font Bureau and in 2016 he launched his own type foundry, CJ Type. His first retail typeface, Dunbar, was chosen by Typographica as one of the Best Typefaces of 2016.
He has given talks for Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) Warsaw, Adobe Max Los Angeles, and Type Lab @ Typographics NYC. His work has been exhibited at The Human Imagination, Max Fish, Mori, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Bās Bookshop, and Kaiao Space. He served as a senior thesis critic for Parsons School of Design, and has taught at Kala Art Institute, University of the Arts, and School of Visual Arts. His work has been featured in publications including Print Magazine, Communication Arts, Slanted Magazine, and Paul Shaw’s book “Revival Type” for Yale University Press. Selected clients include: NY Times, Washington Post, Fox Sports, Microsoft, LA Times, New Yorker, Carbone Smolan Agency, Javas Lehn Studio, Taxi (Young & Rubicam), House Industries, Cooper Hewitt Design Museum Shop, Society of Scribes, Cornerstone Media, Kidrobot, American Design Club, Vast, L’usine, The Chia Co., Nike Basketball, Nike Skateboarding, and Google.
