About the Artist:
Katalina YJ Kim is a local architectural designer born and raised on the island of O'ahu. Her pieces reflect the appreciation of mundane moments and their purpose of being unseen design elements that occur in everyday life. Katalina observes the urban space around her, capturing mundane moments and appreciating the ordinary through art, photography, and design. Her favorite books that depict her views on the beauty of mundaneness are Super Normal, Sensations of the Ordinary by Naoto Fukasawa & Jasper Morrison, Norwegian Woods by Haruki Murakami, and Design as Art by Bruno Munari.
Combining the observational eye of urban still-life photography and watercolor painting, Katalina illustrates everyday scenes in poppy limited color palettes. Her process is taking photos with her analog cameras or phone as she observes the urban environment around her, looking or coming across hidden moments in the city. The final pieces reflect the appreciation of mundane moments and their purpose of being unseen design elements that occur in everyday life.
Building upon her skills to capture a scene, film street photography became the foundational skill of visualizing her compositions. Photographers such as Saul Leiter and Henri Cartier-Bresson are her inspiration for capturing softly dynamic and candid scenes. Another one of her inspirations comes from the poetic still scenes by Edward Hopper. Hopper's focus on lighting and the scene of watching, peering through the subject matter as a viewer within the painting, can be reflected in Katalina's work.
