Details

While most of us call it the Ko’olau (“windward”) mountain range, it isn’t a mountain range per se as it was formed as a single shield volcano - “the Ko’olau Volcano” which started forming 2.5 million years ago.

What remains today is the western fragmented half of the volcano. The eastern half is said to have fallen into the Pacific Ocean in prehistoric times. The remains of this ancient volcano lie as massive fragments strewn nearly 100 miles over the ocean floor to the northeast of Oʻahu. Kāneʻohe Bay is what remains of the ancient volcano's summit caldera after the slide.

The Ko’olau range spans the length of Oahu’s eastern coast for about 34 miles from Kahuku in the north to Makapuu in the south and separates windward Oahu from central Oahu.
