About the Artist

UMAMIPLANT is a queer-owned art project that utilizes a range of mediums to create a imagined world of flora and fauna that reflect ideas of community, identity, emotional experiences, ecological conservation, and local Hawai'i pop culture. Much like the flavor umami, the aim is to create pictures that are both savory & pleasant.

Mitchell Fong is an artist and designer born and based out of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. He graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with a BFA in graphic design, but has always had an affinity for comics and illustration. Having worked in both editorial publishing and retail marketing design industries, he decided in 2022 to bet on his own creative vision and work on developing UMAMIPLANT full-time.
